How Many Chinese Surnames Exist?

Approximately 4,000 Chinese surnames are in active use today. However, the top 100 surnames cover over 85% of the population, and the top three — 王 (Wáng), 李 (Lǐ), and 张 (Zhāng) — account for nearly 300 million people. Historically, the Hundred Family Surnames text from the Song Dynasty listed 504 surnames. The total number of recorded Chinese surnames throughout history is much larger, estimated at over 20,000, but most have fallen out of use.
